Installation Method of a Wrecker Winch
Hydraulic winches have found wide application on tow trucks. They are important functional components commonly used for lifting and towing operations. Hydraulic winches come in various specifications, ranging from light to heavy-duty. Common hydraulic winches feature either a worm gear or planetary gear reduction structure. The winch is driven by a hydraulic motor and uses a reduction device to slow down the speed and increase output torque, thereby achieving the relative heavy-duty pulling capacity of the winch. Worm gear hydraulic winches have a relatively simple structure, are easy to manufacture, have lower transmission efficiency and cost, and are generally used for medium- and light-duty hydraulic winches. In contrast, planetary hydraulic winches have a relatively complex structure, a high transmission ratio, higher transmission efficiency and manufacturing costs, and are generally used for medium- and heavy-duty hydraulic winches.
On tow trucks, hydraulic winches are often installed in a central position, although side-mounted hydraulic winches are gradually being used on some tow trucks. A tow truck typically has one or two winches installed. Depending on the design, the winch wire rope can feed in upward or downward directions. To prevent rope tangling, the winch should be equipped with a rope guide device. The selection and installation of the winch and wire rope on a tow truck are crucial as they affect the vehicle's technical and safety performance. Therefore, attention must be paid during installation and use:
(1) Before installing the winch, check whether all parts are complete and free from damage. Any damaged parts must be replaced before installation.
(2) The winch should be connected to the mounting seat or bracket using high-strength bolts with a mechanical property of grade 10.9 or higher to ensure sufficient connection strength.
(3) After installing the winch, check that the hydraulic circuit is correctly connected, the clutch can engage and disengage normally, and that the winch drum can rotate smoothly without any jamming.
(4) When winding the wire rope onto the winch, insert the rope end into the drum hole, tighten the screws, and with the winch in the rope-retraction state, wind 4-5 turns, then apply a 3-5 kN force to tighten the wire rope.
(5) The maximum deviation angle of the wire rope while winding on or off the drum should not exceed 3° to prevent rope tangling and uneven load on the winch. When idle, the rope guide should hold the rope tightly to prevent loosening and tangling.
(6) After installing the winch, perform a no-load run before heavy-duty testing or after long-term storage to ensure smooth motor operation.
(7) When lifting or towing heavy objects, disengaging the winch clutch is strictly prohibited. During winch operation, at least five turns of the wire rope should remain on the drum.
(8) Using the winch beyond its rated capacity is strictly prohibited to prevent damage and safety accidents.
